How to Grow Bulbs

Couldn't be simpler...

Buying Bulbs

In fall, bulbs show up at home improvement stores. They aren't for sale year-round because planting bulbs in warm months will not give success.

You may even see bulbs in your local grocery stores. You want to look for bulbs that are larger sized. Often, they will be marked "top-sized" bulbs.

Many catalogs also specialize in bulbs. If you order in spring, they will ship to you at the appropriate growing season for your area.

Planting Bulbs

Bulbs do not require wide holes, but they should be several inches deep. The correct planting information will appaer on your packaging, and it will vary based on the size of the bulbs you're planting.

One of the great things about planging bulbs is that you don't have to worry very much about shade. Because bulbs bloom in early spring, they get plenty of sun before leaves sprout on the trees. Even if you have a very shady yard, you can still grow bulbs succesfully.

Caring for Bulbs

Once your bulbs are in the ground, all you have to do is leave them alone. Rain is fine, but they don't need extra water. They will bloom without any assistance in spring.

After your bulbs bloom, the foilage will droop. You may be tempted to trim it back to the ground. Don't do this! Allow the foiliage to die back naturally because cutting it will likely mean your bulbs will not grow the following year.
